Don’t Be Ashamed To Get Help

shutterstock_312380828Sadly, there are millions of people who struggle with mental health issues. Because of social stigmas, some family members refuse to recognize a loved one who is struggling; additionally, those who are struggling are scared to seek help and receive treatment. For some odd reason, having a mental illness is shameful.

Sprout Health Florida wants you to know that you do not need to be ashamed of your condition; you should embrace it, learn to control it and help educate others about it. We understand that these issues are caused by a chemical imbalance that can be treated with prescription medications as well as immersing yourself into highly effective therapeutic modalities.

We will offer you support, guidance and the tools to overcome your condition. Like addiction, mental health disorders can be treated; it just takes hard work and dedication.

Understanding the State of Mental Health

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, half of our population suffers from mental health disorders but only 60 percent of them seek treatment. The other 40 percent choose not to seek treatment and therefore cause themselves more health issues and complications. The biggest issue with not seeking treatment is the potential for substance abuse. Most people with mental health issues that do not seek treatment might begin to abuse their prescriptions and when those no longer do the job, they will seek other illicit substances. Substance abuse almost always leads to addiction and addiction leads to overdose or death.

Sprout Health Florida offers many different types of therapeutic modalities that help combat maladaptive behaviors and offer treatment programs that are highly individualized in order to meet our patient’s unique needs.

Causes of Mental Health

There are many factors that cause mental health disorders, such as biological and genetic factors as well as infections and prenatal damage.

  • Biological Factors: Studies have shown that there may be a link between mental illness and an imbalance in brain chemicals. When the brain’s chemicals, also known as neurotransmitters, are imbalanced, our nerve cells cannot properly communicate with each other. The lack of communication causes impaired cognitive functioning, which is necessary for motor skill development.
  • Genetic Factors: Mental health disorders can be linked to genetics; it is not uncommon for them to run in families. Those with a family history of mental illness have an increased risk of developing a mental health illness as well.
  • Infections: Certain infections, such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection, sepsis, malaria, Legionnaire’s disease, syphilis, typhoid, diphtheria, HIV, rheumatic fever and herpes have been linked to mental health illness.
  • Prenatal Damage: The loss of oxygen during the prenatal stage can also be a factor in what causes mental illness. Studies have shown that trauma in during this stage can negatively impact a baby’s brain development.
  • Poor Nutrition: A poor diet has also been linked to mental health illness, especially among substance abusers. Because abusers go days without eating, they lose nutrients that are necessary for brain and body development. This is why during the detox process, Sprout Health Florida offers nutritional support, in order to replenish all lost nutrients and restore a healthy body.

Recognizing Mental Health Issues

recognize-mental-health-issuesDiagnosing a mental health disorder is an extremely complex process. Our staff at Sprout Health Florida is trained to understand how the mind works and how thoughts are manifested in behaviors. We also understand that most mental conditions overlap or intertwine with one another. There are not always clear indicators for certain mental illnesses. For example, it is natural to feel sad when a loved one passes away; however, it is not natural to feel sad for five consecutive years. This could be the result of depression; however, sadness is not the only symptom of depression. There are many symptoms in most mental illnesses that are similar to others, such as:

  • Feeling sad or down
  • Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate
  • Excessive fears or worries
  • Extreme feelings of guilt
  • Extreme mood changes of highs and lows
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Significant tiredness or low energy
  • Detachment from reality
  • Inability to cope with daily problems or stress
  • Trouble understanding and relating to situations
  • Excessive anger, hostility or violence
  • Suicidal thinking

Over the years, our staff has acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to proficiently and accurately diagnose mental health disorders. We utilize the best practices and are equipped to handle those suffering from disorders, such as:

  • Anxiety: At least 18 percent of Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder, such as social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder is characterized by a debilitating fear of social situations. Symptoms of anxiety include muscle tension, hot flashes, nightmares, obsessive thoughts and numbness.
  • Bipolar disorder: Bipolar disorder is known for the feelings of mania accompanied by feelings of deep depression. There is no in between, a person is either up or down.
  • Depression: The symptoms of depression include, long lasting feelings of despair, lack of self-worth, fatigue, lack of concentration, suicidal thoughts and pain or discomfort that cannot be explained.
  • Panic disorder: This is a life-disrupting disorder in which panic attacks happen frequently and for no apparent reason.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: This disorder develops in people who have experienced a traumatic event and in later days, months or years will feel fear and anxiety that ties to the aforementioned event.
  • Schizophrenia: The symptoms of schizophrenia include hallucinations, disorganized thinking and speech and abnormal behavior. People may experience social isolation, aggressive behavior, self-harm or a lack of restraint.

Do not be discouraged by social stigmas, you can trust our licensed professionals to accurately diagnose and treat your mental disorders.

Mental Health Treatment Methods

There a number of effective methods for the treatment of mental health disorders, which may include:

  • Psychotherapy: This therapy is designed to help patients explore their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Patients learn how to improve their well-being through positive thoughts.
  • Medication: Medication is not a cure for mental health disorders but it does help ease the symptoms of them. It is recommended to combine medication with psychotherapy to achieve better results.
  • Case Management: Case managers are assigned to each patient in order to closely monitor their treatment process. The managers will adjust patient’s programs according to their progress.
  • Hospitalization: Depending on the severity of the disorder, some patients may need to be monitored by medical professionals in a hospital setting. Similar to case management, monitoring helps the staff adjust treatment programs in order to increase the chance of a successful recovery.
  • Support Groups: Support groups are extremely necessary for the obvious reason. Patients are able to listen, share and learn from others in a safe and comfortable environment, surrounded by people who are experiencing similar trials and tribulations.
  • Self-Help: While treatment programs are designed for medical professionals to help treat addiction and mental health disorders, it is important for patients to want to help themselves as well. Through the self-help process, patients will learn how to support their own wellness and recovery as well as triggers that will cause relapse.
  • Peer Support: Similar to support groups, it is important for patients to share

One of our most effective treatments is through a combination of our therapeutic modalities. We believe the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is best suited for those with personality, mood, anxiety, eating and substance abuse disorders. It teaches patients how to better solve problems without the use of substances as well as how to take a systematic approach for positive conclusions.

mental-health-treatment-support-groupsWe also offer experiential therapies, such as yoga, meditation, equine therapy and art therapy. Our equine therapy is proven to teach our patients how to care for others as well as themselves, which increases their self-esteem. Yoga and meditation do not only promote physical health but it also clears the mind and allows patients to reflect on their behaviors and find ways to mentally control them.

We provide the tools necessary for our patients to control their behaviors and achieve a successful and long lasting recovery.
