Eating Disorders Treatment

Eating Disorders Information

eating-disordersStudies show that over 10 million Americans struggle with an eating disorder. Medical experts say that eating disorders are mostly psychological, being caused by low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, anger and loneliness. Other factors include the inability to adapt to situations, parental separation, a history of psychiatric problems, negative comments about eating and the social pressures to be thin. These factors may not be the cause of the eating disorder but they definitely contribute to them.
Although scientists have yet to determine the exact biological and chemical factors for eating disorders, they have found that there are certain brain chemicals that control appetite, hunger and digestion. They mostly contribute eating disorders to immediate environment, social acceptance and psychological issues.

Signs and Symptoms of eating disorders

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Those who suffer from anorexia nervosa envision thinness as perfection. They might also be part of a large family where one or more of the children may suffer from it as well. It might have been developed as a result of an eating conflict or struggle around food.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Like all eating disorders, the cause of bulimia nervosa is unknown; however, there are a few contributing factors, such as psychological issues. The symptoms of this disorder include:
    • Dissatisfaction
    • An obsessive need to diet or fast
    • Social pressure to look thin
  • Binge Eating: Binge eating is characterized by individuals consuming massive amounts of food each time they eat followed by vomiting. One of the signs to look for is the amount they eat is well beyond what any normal human being should eat and somehow they remain relatively normal in body weight. Like all other eating disorders, the exact cause is unknown but it is contributed to by social pressures and psychological problems.
