The Sunshine State is one of the most beautiful states to visit
The weather is lovely all year long; in fact, Clearwater Beach in Tampa holds the world record for having the most days of sunshine. Florida’s sun is so prominent that it prompted Miami Beach pharmacist, Benjamin Green, to invent suntan lotion back in 1944. There are over 663 miles of white, sandy beaches and no matter where you are, you are never more than 60 miles from the ocean.
Florida is home to America’s primary launch pad for space flights in Cape Canaveral, as well as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando. Nearly 46 million people visit Walt Disney World every year, where they will lose an estimated 1.65 million pairs of glasses, drink over 75 million cokes and consume more than 10 million pounds of hamburgers. The tourists may overindulge; however, the residents of Florida are pretty healthy; in fact, Miami was the first to install an ATM outside of their banks in order for the rollerbladers who could not go inside to withdraw or deposit their cash.
Population of Florida
Florida is the third most populous state in the United States. Its most well-known county, Miami-Dade, boasts a population of just over 6 million. Miami-Dade County is a major Latin American center, primarily populated by Cubans, El Salvadorans, Colombians and Venezuelans; in fact, since 1959, more than 800,000 Cubans have immigrated to Florida. Little Havana in Miami is a popular spot for the Latin American community; it is also a popular place for drug trafficking from Cuba.
In 2003, the Cuban government seized over four tons of drugs before it was shipped to the United States; however, because they stop one shipment, it does not mean there will not be more. In fact, Florida has seen an influx in:
- Marijuana: Marijuana causes an altered sense of time and space as well as variations in mood. Perceptions become unclear, problems with coordination occur and certain risk factors cause the possibility of depression and schizophrenia. It also causes an increase in heart rate and future lung obstruction.
- Cocaine: Studies show that 1 million Americans are addicted to cocaine and sadly, a small percentage of those are eighth graders. Cocaine is the second most widely abused drug in the world causing more than half a million visits to the hospital each year.
- Prescription drugs: About 7 million Americans take prescription medications recreationally or in a way that is not prescribed by their doctors. Almost half a million individuals are hospitalized for problems related to prescription abuse. Recent studies show that every 19 minutes, someone dies from an unintentional drug overdose.
- Heroin: Heroin is an extremely potent opioid drug. It is highly addictive and extremely dangerous. There are 9.2 million users, with over 900,000 in the United States alone. In just one year, heroin caused over 50,000 overdose deaths.
Each of these substances can ruin every aspect of your life and lead to overdose or death. When you or someone you love are struggling with a substance addiction, it is important to seek help from a reputable facility.
