Those that suffer with a mental illness often feel ashamed and often get categorized as “crazy” and “not normal”. Mental illness is not taken as seriously as it should be within society. Why is that?

Probably because communities are not educated on mental health as they should be.

Mental Health vs. Mental Disorder

According to Mayo Clinic, there is a difference between mental health and mental disorders. Mental health conditions are not the cause from a physical disorder. When it comes to mental health, the conditions are treated based on symptoms. The following things can affect a person’s mental health:

  • Behavior – Doing anything obsessively, such as obsessive drinking or hand-washing.
  • Feelings – Depression can be seen as a mental health condition because it characterized as a sign of an ongoing feeling of sadness. Other feelings may include anger or euphoria.
  • Thinking – This is when a person has fixed thoughts or unstable beliefs which are the cause of conflicting evidence, this also includes suicidal thoughts.

A mental disorder, better known as a mental illness, is a condition that affects the way a person thinks, feels, or behaves. These conditions can alter someone’s ability to communicate with others and to function on a day to day basis. Most are tested for mental disorders when symptoms are recognized. When a person is diagnosed with a mental disorder, they can be subscribed medications that assist them in living a productive and healthy life.

They say to never judge a book by its cover before digging into its contents. People never know what another person is going through by just looking at them. Someone can appear to be happy and satisfied from the outside, but internally they are unhappy and trying to keep hanging on to life by a thread. According to Wikipedia, approximately 253 million people suffered from Major Depressive Disorder. Of those 253 million, 2 to 7 % of adults have committed suicide and up to 60% of people who die from suicide suffered from depression or another mental health disorder.
